Bill Kidd MSPbill-kidd-ryan-1

I was happy and honoured to have visited Ryan McLaughlan and his family at their home, to give my support to his ‘Shine on Scotland’ campaign.

We talked about the campaign and the benefits of Vitamin D for Multiple Sclerosis, and also the linkage between Vitamin D deficiency with cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Scotland seems to be the ‘genetic source’ for Multiple Sclerosis and from that it would seem only right that we take a lead in tackling it right from pregnancy and birth and throughout life by adopting a regime of Vitamin D every day.

I have been so impressed by Ryan McLaughlin as the voice of ‘Shine on Scotland’, for a young man to speak so well on such a difficult subject as MS which affects his family as well as thousands more across Scotland is something his parents, Kirsten and Alan, can feel proud of.

Shine on Scotland has a message of hope that we can aim to rid our country of the scourge of MS and that it can be done with something so common and cheap to provide as Vitamin D means it’s a ‘no brainer’ to me.

Ryan’s campaign has all my best wishes.

Bill Butler MSP

I would like to express my support for Shine on Scotland and its campaign for pregnant women and bill-butleryoung children in Scotland to be given Vitamin D supplements.  I recently met with Ryan McLaughlin, 14, from Drumchapel, who is the driving force behind Shine on Scotland.  Ryan’s campaign to tackle the disease was inspired by his mum, former Tae Kwon Do champion Kirsten, 34, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.

On June 16, Ryan will make his way to the Scottish Parliament dressed as William Wallace, along with 500 children with Saltires painted on their faces, to lodge a petition calling for Vitamin D to be given in the form of pills, fortified milk or bread to pregnant women and young children, with the aim of combating MS.

It was a privilege to meet Ryan McLaughlin and I wish him and Shine on Scotland every success in their campaign.  MS is a terrible condition and I support every effort which aims to reduce the number of people who have to endure its effects.  As a member of the Petitions Committee at the Scottish Parliament, I offer my full support to Shine on Scotland and I look forward to seeing Ryan and other members of Shine on Scotland on June 16.

James Kelly MSP

“I am pleased to give my support to Ryan Mclaughlin and  the Shine on Scotland campaign. Multiple sclerosis can have a devastating effect on those who have the misfortunate to suffer from the its effects. It is also stressful for friends and family to have to deal with. As a result we must do all we can to support the introduction of preventative measures such as the introduction of vitamin D.”

Bob Doris MSP

“I will be happy to support this and my best wishes, Bob”

Quote re. Shine on Scotland campaign:

‘As a mother myself, I was moved to hear of Ryan’s efforts on behalf of his mum Kirsten. For a young boy to stand up and speak so eloquently on this difficult subject shows remarkable skill and courage. He has campaigned tirelessly to get this important issue raised in Parliament – his parents must be very proud.

I am happy to support Ryan in his crusade to promote the benefits of vitamin D to help prevent thousands of new cases of MS.’ – Elaine Smith MSP
