GOOD week for . . .
Older people taking vitamin D supplements, after research showing the vitamin reduces their chances of having a fall.
The study, online in the BMJ, analysed good quality trials of elderly people (average age 65 or older) taking vitamin D supplements. Data from eight trials combined showed that high-dose vitamin D supplements _ 700IU to 1000IU a day _ reduced fall risk by 19 per cent. Doses of supplemental vitamin D of less than 700IU a day did not lead to a notable reduction in fall risk.
