me n ryanI would like to record my personal gratitude to Jo Rowling for the massive donation to research, and also thank her for the ongoing support of  the Shine on Scotland campaign.

The incredible donation recently announced will effect everyone with MS but it means much more to my own family than just the MS research.

The new Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic will research other diseases and hopefully move towards finding a cure for Motor Neurone, a disease that has effected my family deeply and personally.

My great grandfather John Moore was the first person to be diagnosed with the disease in Scotland.  And only 2 years ago we lost my mum’s uncle who had both Motor Neurone and Parkinson’s which is very rare .

When my own mum took i’ll we feared that it was Motor Neurone and i’ll never forget the fear that I felt. I can only hope this investments in Scotlands health will yield great results and lead to future treatments to improve the outcome.

The previous investments made by Jo into research at the Edingburgh research center is already getting results.

‘I believe the investment puts Scotland firmly at the front of research into finding the cure for MS ‘

This has been in no small part due to the involvement of Jo Rowling

I have renewed hope for what the future holds for my mum and that a cure will be found for her and all the suffers living with these diseases.

Thank you from my family.

The Scottish Govenrment has made a series of key pledges relating to MS and vitamin D, following a petition by Ryan McLaughlin.

A schoolboy who set out to raise awareness of the medical condition suffered by his mother has spoken of his pride in securing a number of key pledges from the Scottish Government.

Ryan McLaughlin went to Holyrood’s Public Petition Committee last year to raise the issue of links between vitamin D and multiple sclerosis.

The 14-year-old’s petition called on ministers to produce new guidelines on vitamin D supplements for children and pregnant women, along with an awareness campaign about the issue.

The Scottish Government has now agreed to support and host a summit in April on the role of vitamin D. New guidance on supplements will also now be published. and to produce the guidance on supplements.

Ryan took up the cause a year ago after watching his mother Kirsten suffering the incurable disease. On Tuesday, the committee agreed to close his petition.

Ryan said: “After an amazing year in raising both vitamin D and MS awareness, I now have the commitments that I wanted from the Scottish Government.

“I applaud the positive action taken by the Scottish Government and the support from Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Shona Robison, Health and Sports Minister.”

Ryan’s local MSP Bill Butler hailed the campaigning schoolboy’s achievement, saying “a very great deal of progress” has been made.

The Glasgow Anniesland politician hailed the way “Ryan and the McLaughlin family have persuaded the Government and the Government has listened to the very sensible suggestions contained in the petition”.

He said: “The Government has agreed to a co-ordinated programme of action with NHS Scotland to produce guidance on vitamin D, to educate women on its importance, to consider different messages for different groups of people and to ensure that health professionals are giving correct and consistent advice to pregnant women and new mothers in relation to vitamin D.”

He described that as a “significant success”, adding: “It’s people listening to what is a very sensible set of suggestions from someone whose personal circumstances have convinced him that there is need for reform here.

“It’s a success story.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Government said: “We’re keen to learn all we can about any possible links between vitamin D and multiple sclerosis and are keeping a very close eye on all the emerging evidence.”

Ryan Mclaughlin launches ‘Fortify Scotland’s school milk’ campaign

Ryan McLaughlin launches ‘Fortify Scotland’s school milk’ campaign

14 year old Ryan McLaughlin of the Shine on Scotland campaign has launched a new social networking campaign to gain public support for his Idea of adding vitamin D to all school milk in Scotland. The 14 year old campaigner believes that vitamin D is so important to improving the health of scottish kids and wants to ascertain how many parents agree with him, using the social platform Facebook.

Ryan is asking scottish parents to join the group and have their say on the subject.

Figures compiled by Oxford University for a national supplementation program of vitamin D in scotland suggest 2000 cases of MS could be prevented over the next 10 years and save the UK economy £4 billion over 25 years.

The World Health Organisation have said that Scotland should start a national supplementation program.

The campaigner says ‘much work still has to be done to get the RDA of vitamin D raised significantly and I will work with the Scottish Government, SACN and the FSA to get that done, but I am positive that fortifying school milk with vitamin D offers the best solution to offering protection to all kids in Scotland’

I am proud to say that the Scottish Government have been amazing in supporting my goals, they have really listened and acted on the current evidence in support of vitamin D, as more evidence is put in place I believe that the case for fortification of school milk will increase, the Scottish government have not ruled out my proposal for fortified school milk they have said “Following advice from the FSA Scotland, the Scottish Government believes that it would not be appropriate to introduce fortified milk (or other fortified drinks) at school until such time as the evidence base is more conclusive about the impact on the population.

However this was said before new research released by the scottish government and the announcement that NHS Scotland said there was now an ‘urgent need to educate women and that all pregnant mothers and all children up to the age of 4 should be taking vitamin D everyday’ .

Now that BUPA have said that they believe vitamin D could prevent cancer and Israel announced all 3% milk is to be fortified I think we need to ask the Scottish Government to look at this again as the evidence is certainly more conclusive and it can only have a healthy impact on the population .

We are now aware that it will cost  £2.7 million if every pregnant mother and child takes up the Health Start vitamin’s on offer but what would it cost to fortify the school milk, I think some political will and some help with financial costs to the dairies could see this happen sooner rather than later.

Almost all milk in the US is fortified with vitamin D, Israel has just decided to fortify all 3% milk and we have heard rumors that both France and Ireland are also considering such a move.

Ryan McLaughlin to ask for a meeting with the Prime Minister

gordonbrown

Ryan Mclaughlin of the Shine on Scotland campaign for vitamin D as a preventitive measure against MS will step up his campaigning this week for a meeting with the UK Prime Minister Mr Gordon Brown.

The bravehearted 14 year old tried to get sneaky meeting with him a few weeks back when he visited North Glasgow College to support Willie Bain but unfortunately there just wasn’t enough time but he was promised a meeting at a later date, although a little disappointed he knew that Mr Brown was a very busy man and was happy to get a promise of a meet at a later date.

Mrs Sarah Brown is a great supporter of MS and he hopes that Mr Brown will support him.

Ryan says ” this is so important to my cause if we can get the UK government support we may be able to move forward in the prevention of  MS through vitamin D supplementation,  there are loads of people from all over the UK wanting this now – I get emails almost every day from Mum’s wanting to protect their kids , it is so cheap to supply it so why delay it’s introduction – a clinical study would cost a 100 times more than just doing it now and would take years to show results  and we must protect kids from MS now.

He say’s the  Scottish Government have been amazing and so supportive and he hopes to open the eyes of the UK  Government in a similar fashion to the Scottish Government but said he has no plans to dress as William Wallace again on any visit and it will be kept very low key.

PLUCKY RYAN TURNS HEARTACHE INTO BRAVE HELP CAMPAIGN

By Kathleen Nutt, 01/08/2009

PLUCKY schoolboy Ryan McLaughlin has turned the heartache of seeing his mum suffer from multiple sclerosis into a brave campaign to save others from the same pain.

The 14-year-old even led a 1,000-strong march on Holyrood in a brave bid to persuade MSPs to dish out free vitamin D supplements to help beat the disease.

And after putting his case to them, he will meet with Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon next month to discuss his proposals.

Ryan’s actions have now earned him a nomination for our Bighearted Child Of The Year award.

And last night mum Kirsten, 34, of Drumchapel, Glasgow, said: “He is a true hero. I am proud to call him my son.”

Ryan was devastated when she was diagnosed with the disease two years ago. The ex-European tae kwon do champion now struggles to climb stairs or even get dressed.

But after learning that vitamin D in sunlight helps prevent the condition, the schoolboy launched his Shine On Scotland campaign.

Ryan and family on march

He’s calling for children and mums-to-be to get vitamin D supplements free.

The determined youngster has also presented a short film about MS. It’s now been viewed all over the world and, in May, it was even screened at half time during the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden.

As well as his campaigning, the Knightswood High School pupil has proved an invaluable help to dad Alan, 35, and brother Darren, ten.

Graphic designer Alan said: “Without Ryan’s help, I do not know how we would have got through the ordeal. He drew strength from our family’s pain and decided to fight for the health of future generations of Scots. He has received worldwide support for his campaign. He’s an inspiration to everyone.”

Ryan’s nomination for our coveted Child Of The Year award could now earn him a second meeting with Nicola Sturgeon – because the Deputy First Minister is presenting the awards at our glitttering ceremony hosted by Sportscene’s Dougie Vipond at Glasgow’s Marriot Hotel on September 4.

Ryan beamed: “I’m thrilled to be up for this award – I hope it helps my campaign. I was really scared at first when I was told my mum had MS.

“Then I decided to see if I could do something to help.”

Ryan’s campaign has been backed by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, 44. Her mother Anne died from an MS-related illness in 1990 at the age of just 45.

Scotland has the world’s highest MS rate, with over 12,500 sufferers. MS Society Scotland’s David McNiven said: “Ryan is an inspiring young man. The MS Society funded the research that sparked his campaign. He’s done a great job.”

The charities to benefit from Bighearted Scotland 2009 are: Alcohol Focus Scotland, CLIC Sargent, Epilepsy Scotland, Momentum, Penumbra and Scottish Native Woods.
